Dr A Seshu Kumar

Dr A Seshu Kumar, is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Principal of CMR College of Engineering and Technology since December 2024. Obtained Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in the year 2000 and received master’s degree in mechanical engineering with specialisation in Production Engineering from IIT Bombay, Mumbai in the year 1987. Joined CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) in the year 1988 and served for 15 years before joining CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) in the year 2002. Superannuated in the January 2023 in the position of Chief Scientist at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad.

Worked on several industrial, grant-in-aid and collaborative projects as Principal investigator/ Project Leader while serving in CSIR. Focus of research has been in ‘Science and Technology of Welding’ and ‘Mechanical Engineering domain of Chemical Science and Technology’. Current research interests include computational welding mechanics and application of computational fluid dynamics for solving flow and stress problems as part of Industry 1.0, 2.0 and so on, Development of Prototypes for chemical R&D applications, Additive Manufacturing, Mechano-chemistry, Secondary Biotechnology. Also experienced in providing crucial managerial, engineering, TQM support to R&D, scale up, technology demonstration and successful transfer of technology to the industry.

Published over 10 papers in peer reviewed journals and presented over 50 papers in International & National Conferences. Guided about 20 students for their M. Tech Dissertations and 5 students for Ph.D. till date.

Some of the recent research contributions include development of “Cost effective technology for making Delignified Rice Straws (DRS) with improved digestion for cattle feed applications” with a sanctioned grant of Rs. 334.10 lakhs from CSIR under Fast Track Translational Project as Principal Investigator. Also served as Principal Investigator for a project in the area of waste management titled “Preparation of Nano-Silica from Rice Husk Ash Waste using Novel Green Mechano-Chemical Route” supported by Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi under DST TDT – Advanced Manufacturing Technology Programme to a tune of Rs. 66.10 lakhs. Provided project consultancy report to M/s Scope Ingredients Pvt Ltd on project costing for infrastructure/ machinery/ raw material/ HR to set up the plant for polymer excipients for the specified production capacity for a total cost of Rs. 17.00 lakhs. Contributed to the development of low-cost expeller for the extraction of cold pressed oils from oil seeds.

Served as Chairman of Process Engineering and Technology Transfer Department at CISR-IICT for over 5 years before superannuation. Earlier served as Head of Engineering Services Department at CSIR-IICT and CSIR-NML for over 15 years managing Central Workshop including Prototype Development, Mechanical Maintenance, Electrical Engineering Services, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration services, captive foundry and black smithy and institute automobiles management. Received CSIR-IICT Foundation Day Best Performance Award in the year 2008 and CSIR Foundation Day Best Technology Management Services Award from CSIR-IICT in the year 2011.
